I have always loved chocolate cake. For years, I searched for the ultimate version: a cake that was deeply chocolatey, incredibly moist, and paired with a frosting that was rich and creamy without being overly sweet.
About twenty-five years ago, I came across a recipe in a magazine. I tore the page out, brought it home, and baked it that same week. From the very first bite, I knew this cake was special.
It quickly became my go-to dessert for birthdays, celebrations, dinner parties, and those everyday moments when you simply needed chocolate cake. Friends and family started requesting it again and again.

When we opened Bake Sale Toronto, it was one of the very first cakes we added to the menu. Almost immediately, it became a customer favourite — and more than two decades later, it still is.
Over the years, we’ve introduced countless new cake and cupcake flavours, from seasonal creations to limited-edition favourites. But our chocolate cake continues to be one of our best sellers year after year.
What makes it special is its simplicity.

Our Best Serving Tip
One of our favourite tips for enjoying chocolate cake at its absolute best is to bring it to room temperature before serving.
We recommend taking the cake or cupcakes out of the fridge 1–2 hours before serving so the cake becomes extra soft and the frosting turns perfectly creamy.
Another bonus: both the cake and cupcakes freeze beautifully, making them perfect to keep on hand for celebrations, guests, or future chocolate cravings.

Here’s a handy guide to our cake sizes and the number of servings you can expect:
- 5” Sweetheart Cake — serves 4–6 people
- 7” Perfect Cake — serves 8–10 people
- 9” Celebration Cake — serves 16–20 people
- 10” Square Cake or 12” Round Cake — serves 25–30 people
- 12” Square Cake — serves 35–40 people
- 12” x 18” Rectangle Cake — serves 50–55 people
All serving estimates are based on 2” x 2” slices.
